Mt St Helens "The Car"

Mt St Helens Wet, cement-like slurries of rock and mud scoured all sides of the volcano. Searing flows of pumice poured from the crater. The eruption lasted 9 hours , but Mount St. Helens and the surrounding landscape were dramatically changed within moments. Loosing about 1,300 feet in elevation. Short You Tube Video (About 7 Mins.) "The Car" (Click on the pic to enlarge) 1980: Try to imagine the power and magnitude of a blast that leaves trees looking like match sticks! 2009: Green plants, flowers and a few small trees dot the devastated landscape. 2016: Self-seeded and planted trees gain strength and height but ghost trees still stand on the hill... 37 years later

Mt St Helens

Nearly 37 years have past since the major eruption... Yet the "ghost trees" stand as witnesses to the devastating disaster. For additional pictures check out these pages: Mt St Helens 2009 Mt St Helens 2016 May 18, 1980 - A day that will be long remembered, especially for us in the Pacific Northwest. I lived just 3 hrs away and I awoke to a world of gray, ash fell like snow from the sky. The news carried unbelievable photos and videos of massive destruction, as trees, houses and people were swept away in an instant. With help from re-plantings of natural tree species the Mt St Helens National Forest is well on he path to recovery. Plants, fowls, and animals have returned in abundance.
